Miami-based Norwegian Epic, the new ship from Norwegian Cruise Lines, was forced to return to Miami Saturday for what passengers were told was a medical emergency.
Reports from the ship indicate the announcement came during the ship’s evening entertainment saying they would arrive back in Miami about 11PM and dock at 12:30AM. At 2AM a “Body was just removed from the ship and taken away in a white van” reports the Miami Herald from postings taken off an online cruise message board.
A statement we received from Norwegian Cruise Lines stated:
“After setting sail on a seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise yesterday at approximately 4 pm, Norwegian Epic returned to the Port of Miami at approximately 12:45 am for a medical disembarkation. While the ship was approximately 40 nautical miles from Miami, a guest on board suffered a heart attack and passed away. All local authorities were notified and some met the ship upon arrival. The ship departed at approximately 2:45 am. Norwegian Cruise Line extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family during this difficult time.”
Sunday was to be a day at sea for the Norwegian Epic with St. Maarten being the first port of call on Monday. Since returning to the Port of Miami took so little time, no change in the ship’s itinerary is expected.
