We’re on our way to New York City for a press conference being held by Carnival Cruise Lines.   The highly-anticipated event will be covered by most major cruise news outlets along with media from the New York area.  While no details have been released yet, we’ll be there tweeting and reporting live from the scene.  Watch for updates starting at 1PM Eastern time via Twitter, Facebook and right here on our blog.

This is not the first time Carnival has made an announcement in New York and previous topics have a common element; they all concern the city.

Last December,  the line threw its signature “Fun” hat in the ring as official confetti sponsor of the Times Square New Years Eve 2011 celebration. The sponsorship included multiple opportunities for the line to infuse its version of fun into the festivities including a free-cruise giveaway.  The next week, Carnival launched a campaign that “inspires people to try new things to add more Fun to their lives.” Carnival kind of “fun” that is, marking the beginning of a full-throttle social engagement effort.

An April agreement is enabling Brooklyn to become the first east coast cruise operation with the capability to let ships “plug in” to clean shoreside electrical power rather than running their diesel-burning engines when in port.  The $15 million project will be funded with $12 million from the Port Authority and nearly $3 million from a US Environmental Protection Agency grant. Carnival Corporation will spend $4 million to retrofit their Princess Cruises and Cunard Line ship that dock in Brooklyn.

In June, the line announced that Carnival Miracle would make the city its year-round home port. The move, which goes into effect next April, will result in Carnival Miracle making an additional 21 calls at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal bringing an estimated 52,000 additional embarking passengers into the city.

Stay tuned…
