The mission of the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, Texas is to inform and educate the public of their aviation heritage and history by acquiring, restoring, preserving and flying the aircraft of yesteryear.  On a whirlwind tour of Galveston while in town for the arrival of Carnival Cruise Lines new Carnival Magic, sailing year-round from the Port of Galveston, we got an exclusive tour of the facility.

Lone Star is an aerospace museum that has on display more than 40 historically significant aircraft and hundreds of artifacts related to the history of flight. The museum’s collection is rare because most of the aircraft actually fly. Located next to Scholes International AirportSchlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark, and the sprawling Moody Gardensresort complex, the museum reported heavy damage from Hurricane Ike, receiving seven to eight feet of water and damaging many aircraft.  Most of the airworthy planes were flown out of the museum prior to the hurricane but those remaining as well as the static displays were largely destroyed or heavily damaged.

Now back in operation, the display is impressive and offers aviation fans a glimpse of the past not found in many places.

See our Lone Star Flight Museum Facebook Gallery for up close photos of the entire museum.
