Food as entertainment on Carnival Cruise Lines

by Chris Owen

We’re on board Carnival Liberty all this week reporting on the implementation of Carnival Cruise Line’s new Funship 2.0 initiative, a $500 million project that promised to transform the line’s onboard experience when it was announced in October.

For sushi lovers it doesn’t get better than this:  Free.  Gratis.  No Charge. Included.

That’s what we found on Carnival Cruise Line’s newly transformed Carnival Liberty.  Just steps from the ship’s Alchemy Bar (think Explorers club meets martini bar), the Origami Sushi Bar is open from 5:00pm to 8:15 pm and offers another venue to begin an evening of entertainment.

We throw this one in the “entertainment” category for a couple reasons.  First, the whole process of making sushi can be fascinating to watch.  Combine that notion with chefs who are happy to explain the process as they work gets a nod to the entertainment factor.   Also, located on the ships main-drag Promenade deck, there are plenty of people-watching opportunities as passersby come and go.

The menu has a California Roll with Crab, avocado and cucumber along with a Salmon Volcano that features spicy salmon and sesame scallions as standard fare every day.  A feature of the day rotates for variety.  Soy Shrimp was the selection of the day when we visited.

The venue offers chop sticks and all the usual condiments one might find in a typical sushi place including a spicy mayonnaise sauce, wasabi and gari.

Take a look at what they have to offer in our Facebook gallery.
