Sydney, Australia’s Garden Island naval base will be used for docking cruise ships and help boost one of the city’s fast-growing industries.
“The Government has listened and therefore they are now going to amend those arrangements to allow those big ships … to actually access Garden Island for berthing purposes,”said Prime Minister Julia Gillard in an ABC Newcastle report.
The move is significant in that enabling ships to dock at Garden Island eliminates the problem some have of being able to fit under Sydney’s Harbour Bridge.
Hopes in the tourism industry were initially dashed when calls to use Garden Island were declared to be in conflict with naval requirements.
