March 19-24  Amsterdam
Viking Odin Naming Ceremony and Preview cruise
Viking River Cruises

Our first European River cruise-  If you have ever thought of going on one of these increasingly popular sailings, follow along on our SeaLog for day by day, blow by blow details.  About the Odin

“Designed by legendary naval architects Yran & Storbraaten, the team behind The Yachts of Seabourn (I am already sold on this…that was all it took) , these new vessels offer state-of-the-art engineering, design and luxury. The Viking Longships—Viking Aegir, Viking Embla, Viking Freya, Viking Idun, Viking Njord and Viking Odin—provide guests with more ways to personalize their trip. Choose from a variety of stateroom classes thanks to our patent pending design*, onboard entertainment options and ship locations from which you can enjoy sailing through the scenery, all the while enriching your time in some of Europe’s most remarkable destinations.”

We fly to Amsterdam on March 19 to be on hand for the Viking Odin naming ceremony on March 21st.

The cruise will begin following the Viking Longship Christening ceremony on March 22, visiting these enchanting destinations:

Volendam & Edam- These charming coastal towns are known for old fishing boats, the traditional clothing still worn by some residents, and cheese! Your ship docks in the heart of town where you can enjoy a guided walking tour.

Volendam is a popular tourist attraction in the Netherlands, well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents. The women’s costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly)

Rotterdam- Lying at the heart of a maze of rivers and artificial waterways, Rotterdam is considered one of the world’s largest ports. Excursion possibilities here may range from Delft, The Hague’s Mauritshuis Museum, or the modern art and architecture that Rotterdam is known for. Rotterdam is also the second-largest city in the Netherlands and one of the largest ports in the world. Starting as a dam on the Rotte river, built in 1270, Rotterdam has grown into a major international commercial centre. Its strategic location at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea and at the heart of a massive rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system extending throughout Europe deliver the reason that Rotterdam is often called the Gateway to Europe.

Kinderdijk & Van Gogh’s Brabant- The masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh are scattered throughout the world, but their roots lie in Brabant. Vincent van Gogh was born and raised here. He produced his first masterpiece The Potato Eaters here. After touring Kinderdijk you can choose this off-the-beaten path excursion that will explore Van Gogh like only Viking can.

Kinderdijk is in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. Kinderdijk is situated in a polder at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands

December 2011 Seabourn Quest

Caviar in the surf was just one part of this milestone experience

“At the end of each sailing I like to look back and consider the entire experience.  Invariably, I will ask family members or traveling companions “What was your favorite part of the cruise?” after we have disembarked the vessel.  Normally, the answers are fairly predictable.   As the final minutes of our 10-night sailing of Seabourn Quest come to a close, and the night we sail through will quickly become day, it is clear, for the first time, that one answer will simply not be enough.”
